The institution
Senderos de Vida “Pathways of life” has been working since 2003 in the city of Rivera and aims to provide support to low-income adolescent mothers in situations of social vulnerability. To do this it offers a space called the Casa de la madre adolescente "Teenage Mothers' Home", attended daily by 20 women who take part in workshops. The organization also seeks to lower the repeat pregnancies, improving the health of mothers and babies, encouraging study and work habits in mothers and helping them gain greater self-confidence.

The project
Reaching U covers the rent of the Teenage Mothers' Home, where the young moms take part in the Espacio Esperanza program, which begins with a Life Project workshop, and for 18 months supports them in a growth process to help them to develop and overcome the difficulties of motherhood in this situation of social risk. The program also offers workshops in employment advice, psychological attention, sexual education, basic care for babies, disease prevention, expression through dance and movement and crafts. Furthermore the young women can sort and sell second hand clothes and look for study materials. The mothers can also participate in the ECA Program (Adolescents Training Institution), which promotes effective job placement.
At the Teenage mothers' house the girls find containment and support from the team in charge.

Achievements with Reaching U's support...
  • 2010: covering the rent of the house for Espacio Esperanza (comprehensive program for the social reintegration of adolescent mothers and their children) and ACE (Adolescents Training Authority INEFOP) to achieve insertion into labor market. The rate of repeat pregnancies was 0% and 17 mothers achieved incorporation into the formal labor market and another 3 found informal work.
  • 2009: covering the rent of the house where about 20 pregnant teenagers or young mothers receive comprehensive care and containment, trying to find better opportunities for themselves so they can raise their children in a more appropriate setting. Funding for a social worker and equipment for the nursery room.
  • 2008: covering the rent of a house attended regularly by 15-20 pregnant teenagers or young mothers. The project came to include activities from Monday to Friday, plus weekends. Activities were incorporated such as crafts and a bakery. This allowed the women to generate income for the organization an acquire work habits. There were also donations of Christmas hampers and toys to the children and moms attending the center.
  • 2007: funding the rent of the house and other equipment and material costs.
