The institution
The purpose of Fundación Niños con Alas, since its inception in 2000, has been to promote the education and development of children living in extreme poverty in different neighborhoods of Montevideo. Through its programs, called Padrinos and Mirando al Futuro, the foundation assists 2,000 children from five schools located in areas of Montevideo where the people live in social vulnerability and marginal conditions.

The project
In 2006, Niños con Alas created the project Looking to the future , to support students who are starting high school and live in neighborhoods where the foundation was already working. The objective of this program is to avoid dropouts by accompanying the teenagers in the change that involves entering high school, supporting them in their studies and providing containment.

Of the five schools supported by Niños con Alas, Reaching U is funding part of the effort in the Federico Ozanam (Villa Española neighborhood), Montserrat (La Teja neighborhood) and Jesús Isaso (Cerro Norte neighborhood). Thanks to the efforts of Niños con Alas and Reaching U, this program has achieved a considerable decrease in dropouts, and in turn has introduced several workshops on drug prevention, vocational guidance and coexistence. At the same time, actions have been coordinated with social networks in the neighborhoods, which benefit both the children who attend the program and their families.

Achievements with Reaching U's support ...
  • 2010: additional funding for the Looking to the Future project at the Banneux, Federico Ozanam y Montserrat schools. The 103 youngster who took part achieved average grades between 7 and 12 and only 5% repeated the year.
