"Reaching U helps us in many ways, it is much more than a financial contribution it makes. Continuous monitoring of the project and continued support for our work makes sets our organization apart. They are very involved and that means they really care about what we are doing."
Victoria Marguery, project director of Madres de la Cruz. |

| The institution |
The civil association Madres de La Cruz has been working for 12 years in La Cruz de Carrasco, Montevideo, providing educational support and containment for children living in the area. This year the association is working with 60 children who attend workshops and share socializing activities. In addition to tutoring and snacks, children attend workshops on music, IT, sports, crafts and painting. All work is done in close communication and coordination with area schools and other public services, such as the neighborhood health clinic, to achieve better development.
A high percentage of these children come from dysfunctional families with domestic violence, abandonment, lack of personal assessment, aggression and need for affection. This affects the children's development and academic performance. Children living in the area show difficulties with learning, verbal communication and concentration. The repetition rate affects one in four school children. However, the children who attend the Madres de la Cruz center have very low repetition rates. |

| The project |
| The technical team at Madres de la Cruz is comprised of three teachers who provide academic support daily, a systemic psychologist and a teacher specializing in learning disabilities. In addition a team of volunteers supports the technical team permanently, providing care for children and families and collaborating on tasks such as preparing snacks and recreational activities. Reaching U funds the work performed by the teachers and the psychologist who each year can attend to more children. |
