The institution
Liceo Jubilar Juan Pablo II is a free privately-managed high school operating since 2002 in the Casavalle neighborhood of Montevideo. It provides comprehensive education to over 150 children and 95 adults, combining formal schooling with other enriching tuition in study skills, IT, adolescent concerns and library. The high school has achieved its educational goals and has become a model for other schools in Uruguay. The dropout rate is 0%, compared with 25% in public high schools. Furthermore, the repetition rate is 0% and the average student grades have been rapidly increasing.

This school is located in Casavalle, a neighborhood where 79% of the population lives below the poverty line and 70% of people aged between 17 and 65 did not complete third grade of junior school (required by law,) according to the report "Results of neighborhood social inclusion and exclusion in Montevideo", Montevideo Social Inclusion Observatory Montevideo 2004. The number of homeless children is increasing, and social problems such as substance abuse, pregnancy and crime are common among adolescents.

The project
For the fifth consecutive year Reaching U is supporting the Liceo Jubilar project with scholarships and funding for high school tuition for students who have graduated from the basic cycle. In 2009, the Uruguayan Ministry of Economy approved a project by Liceo Jubilar where 25% of the donations to that institution will be tax deductible in Uruguay.
