| The institution |
The Obra Don Orione Gurisaes Project provides care for children and teens at social risk and living on the streets of the Villa Muñoz-Goes neighborhood of Montevideo. The goal of the professionals in charge of the institution is to educate the children and teens to successfully in develop life plans for themselves. To do this, the project promotes the development of the children in atmosphere of human warmth, containment and positive stimulus but also teaches them limits. The Villa Muñoz-Goes neighborhood suffers from a severe lack of resources and is plagued by drug, crime and violence related problems.
More than 180 children and young people attend the Gurisaes center in three shifts of activities. The first two periods, morning and afternoon, are for the Children's Club (4 to 11 years) while the Youth Club (12 to 18 years) operates during the evening shift. |

| The project |
All the kids who come to the center are included in the Daily Nutrition Program where main meals are served: breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. In 2011 Reaching U funded this program together with additional training workshops and classes for 130 children and 50 adolescents. In addition, the kids attend workshops on cooking, music, leadership, directed play, IT, vocational guidance and job placement, along with school and high school support. The aim of the workshops is to reinforce and complement the knowledge they acquire in the formal education system.
In 2011, Reaching U also funded the rehabilitation and improvement of the bakery space to provide advanced vocational classes for the young people enrolled in the bakery workshop. |
