GURISAES PROJECT
Children and teenagers :: Education

The goal of the Obra Don Orione "Gurisaes" project is to provide assistance to children and teens living in risk or on the streets of the Villa Muñoz-Goes neighborhood. This neighborhood in central Montevideo suffers from a severe lack of resources and is plagued by drug, crime and violence related problems.

The project's mission is to teach local children and teens to think for themselves and make plans for the future. It encourages children to evolve in an atmosphere of human warmth and positive stimulus but also teaches them limits. The project also accompanies young people through the different stages of adolescent development.

Approximately 185 children and teens attend the center in three shifts. The first two periods, morning and afternoon, are for the Children's Club (4 to 11 years) while the Youth Club (12 to 18 years) operates during the evening shift.

All the kids who come to the center are also included in the Daily Nutrition Program where four meals are served: breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner.

From 2007 onwards younger children aged 4 and 5 began coming to the project from the neighborhood CAIF (Youth and Family Support Center) for kids up to 3 years old. Reaching U's support also allowed bathrooms to be equipped. Since 2008 Reaching U has funded food purchases for the Nutrition Program. In 2009 several workshops were financed including classes designed to develop working skills such as cooking and IT. Others like the Training Workshop focused on life-skill for teenagers.
