The institution
The Providencia Family Promotion Center works to improve the educational prospects and future job opportunities for children and youth in the Cerro neighborhood of Montevideo. The organization offers non-formal education, outside school or high school hours, to 185 kids who come daily to the Kids' Club or Providencia Youth Center. In its 15 years of existence, the Center has been able to carry out significant actions in the area, with a hugely positive impact on the academic performance of the beneficiaries. Recently, Providencia deepened and improved its work with the recruitment of specialists in learning disabilities, psychologists, educational psychologists and a speech-language pathologist.

The project
The pleasure of reading is a project that seeks to improve school performance of the 120 children who attend the Kids Club, by improving their reading comprehension. The project, which has the support of Reaching U, includes monthly workshops for parents, reading encouragement spaces for children and the operation of libraries in each class. The execution of this project is led by a team of educational psychologists, psychologists and teachers of the Center.

The specific objectives of this project are:

  1. Improve the reading speed of each child.
  2. Increase vocabulary in long-term memory.
  3. Encourage reading among family members.
  4. Increase the number of children attending reading spaces.
  5. Encourage the use of the XO laptops from Plan Ceibal (OLPC program) for reading.
  6. Organize an affordable children's book fair in Providencia.
