"I do not know how my life would be now without the support of Aires Puros. I probably would not have finished high school. While I always had the support of my family, my parents did not finish school, and I really wonder who would have helped me to study, with materials and books, or I given me advice on my future. I believe that without someone pushing me, as Aires Puros did, it would not have been easy. I always knew that you must not give up, and if you want you can. But in Aires Puros I felt nurtured to move forward," says Marķa. Marķa Reverdito was born in the neighborhood of Aires Puros in Montevideo, where she lived with her family, in a settlement for much of her life. Today she is a young university student who works as a kindergarten teacher and strives to continue building the future she had always imagined.

The institution
The Aires Puros Salesian Center works as a space for the education, containment and social integration of children and adolescents in the Aires Puros neighborhood of Montevideo. This organization is run by the Salesian order, inspired by the values transmitted by Juan Bosco, who devoted his life to working with street children. The Center has become a reference for families and institutions in the area, thanks to its sustained growth that has generated a variety of opportunities for development and social inclusion of its pupils. Aires Puros currently has a Kids Club and Youth Center, whose main goal is to accompany children and adolescents in the academic process and promote learning as a tool for a better future.

The project
The high school support project:

  1. Strengthens study habits among adolescents in the neighborhood.
  2. Teaches values ??like respect and effort.
  3. Conveys that studying and work are valid tools to build their life project.
  4. Encourages volunteer work among young people to promote interaction between different segments of society.

In 2011, Reaching U once again supported the growth of this project and made greater efforts to hire a coordinator and three teachers, besides increasing the frequency of support to four days per week. It also funded the purchase of chairs and tables to provide 40 young people with an appropriate learning environment.

Achievements with Reaching U's support ...
  • 2010: strengthening the educational project by hiring a coordinator and an educator. This allowed 39 adolescents to attend 3 days a week and improve their school grades. In 2009, 21% of the teens at Aires Puros passed high school and in 2010 this rose to 44%.
