"Before, I lived in the shadow of my husband, but now I am surer of myself. I can speak again without covering my mouth; I have friends, and can now take part in other activities. Before I was always locked in my house, and now I have the self-confidence to go out and say: I'm Raquel.“ Raquel Giordanelli, 35, is one of the beneficiaries of the dental health program.

The institution
The Infancy and Family Care Center (CAIF) Juan XXIII attends to 200 socially vulnerable children living in the settlements of Malvín North and Unión, Montevideo. The center provides workshops for early stimulation (0-2 years) and kindergarten age (2-3 years). It is estimated that a total of 700 families from the area live in marginal circumstances and lack basic needs; 160 of these families receive support from CAIF John XXIII. A high percentage of the adults responsible for the pupils have limited education and job opportunities and lack the encouragement to train or find work.

The project
Reaching U finances the Dental Health Plan, improving oral health and aesthetics of mothers of children attending the center CAIF John XXIII. The project involves an educational process which provides information on dental health care, through workshops and care at the Dental Clinic. The goal is for the women to acquire tools and habits that they can then pass on to their families. The mothers who go through this process experience a major change in their appearance and this has a very positive impact on their self-esteem; something that is very important for asserting their rights in the home, the community and for their potential employability. Another significant aspect is the large number of mothers who, after completing the project, took their children for dental checkups.

Achievements with Reaching U's support …
-
2010: 26 mothers completed dental health treatment. Of these, 16 obtained their certificates of good health, 11 went to work (5 in formal employment), 11 take part in job training projects with our partners, 2 started studying again and one of the mothers is now a storyteller.
- 2008 and 2009: 30 mothers aged 14-30 benefited from the Dental Health Plan. These mothers have an average of 3 to 4 children, live in settlements of shacks without electricity or running water, and have difficulty accessing dental care. The women had dental problems such as missing teeth. This project addressed dental repairs and replacement of front teeth.
